Pengarreg Reviews

Louisa
Location superb, views stunning, property clean bed very comfortable. But toilet flush broken on arrival. Radiator rattled very loudly when heating on needing constant fiddling with valve. Lights in lounge severely flickered minutes after switching on. Resolved only by switching off and purchasing candles. The lounge is a very dark room so this was very inconvenient. Water wouldnt run hot for a bath by time you got in it water was lukewarm warm. All these issues reviews showed previous customers had complained about on number occasions, yet problems not resolved. During our stay we telephoned owner as advised. Nobody got back to us. Disappointed with lack of support and fed up with these discomforts we left cottage a day early. Would not recommend.
Gorgeous beautifully maintained holiday cottage. So warm and inviting with amazing views. We have already rebooked for 6 weeks time.
Firstly, the cottage is beautiful. The instructions we used to locate the property were the directions from the lane opposite the Original Factory Shop. It took us 15 minutes we had two children with us carrying items to get up the hill and to find the cottage. Out of all of the directions, we found these the easiest and quickest. The pictures in the advert are accurate and the views are stunning. The cottage is comfortable and the beds are amazing to sleep in. The kitchen and dining area was particularly nice and I enjoyed reading from the window there. There is a dog bed and also dog bowls for food and water so there is no need to take your own. There are also kitchen towels provided well there was a clean one on the side on our arrival. On arrival, the cottage was very cold and we could not work out how to get the heating on. I messaged Alan who got back to me not long after and he explained what to do to fire it up. After this we had no problems with heating. He did warn me of a knocking noise that might come from the radiators and sure enough that occurred however, if you turn the control slightly on the radiator, it stops immediately. The wifi connection was good which our two boys were happy with also. The local amenities are good, the Coop is OK although it was over NY so supplies were short, there is an excellent fish and chip shop and cafes were lovely. The beach is glorious if not very cold!!! My only negatives were the dishwasher was half full on arrival and it was obvious the dishes had been in there for a few days judging from the smell. There were no dishwasher tablets to put the machine on so I had to do the previous occupants dishes by hand. Also, the hot water was not hot enough to shower or to bath with. Overall a lovely few days away with family. We would certainly come back here certainly on our own so we could do some more exploring.
We had a fabulous time taking in the breathtaking views from all of the windows and outside areas. Inside is beautiful with great facilities. Be ready for a walk to the accommodation but so worth it. Thank you!

This is definitely a 5 star property in an unrivalled location and very nicely renovated. Unfortunately I'm not able to score it as such as there were issues we had that were easily rectified and would have made it just that bit better there was no parking permit and my message to the owner about this was not responded to although the cleaner brought a new one for the next people as we were leaving, they did respond about the leak in the extension and told me that they were aware about it but it would have been nice to know about it before it drenched the dogs bed. There are dimmer switches in all the rooms but the bulbs aren't dimmable so they flicker and aren't always responsive to being switched on. There was a cupboard full of previous visitors food stuff left and therefore nowhere to put our own and lastly the kitchen was not very well equipped.
The property was excellent with great theming, all facilities were of high quality and standard. Fantastic views from every room, very relaxing and isolated. Would definitely stay here again, that said there are a few small elements of maintenance needed, tap on the shower is loose and falls off, the toilet flush not great, the tile trim on the kitchen floor needs fixing as loose and covered with a rug, there is a piece of metal sticking out of the wall in the dining area where the seating is, which needs addressing. We struggled to have a hot shower of bath as water not very hot. The main downside is the location description on the advert. This is not just a small incline, this property is built in to the rock and you have to be fit enough to walk up to the property with any luggage or belongings. The description to find the property also needs to be updated and clear perhaps with a small map as without locals assistance we would not have found it. Very beautiful property with absolutely fantastic views. We were contacted by the owner to see if an electrician could attend but they were happy to wait until we had left. The owner was available for any queries.
Just had the most perfect week and weather at Pengarreg Staying in the Old Town or The Rock as they call it As Holiday Cottages go staying on The Rock in Barmouth is a pretty unique and exceptional experience It is a good old climb from the street and I honestly prefer the slopes to the steps but the location and the views are just breathtaking Pengarreg has been beautifully renovated and has kept many original features, including wooden beams, fireplaces, doors, original locks and keys while at the same time incorporating all the modern features you might expect There were so many great little touches the Kraken wash basin, the reclaimed table and benches with that view, the lovely kitchen, the rope fence and seating outside, super comfy beds and warm robes If the framed original key is anything to go by the property is 270 years old next year and I believe work and improvements are still ongoing to the property and it is very much a labour of love especially with older properties I highly recommend Dinas Oleu Viewpoint, The Frenchmans Grave, Cae Fadog Viewpoint, Panaroma Walk Viewpoint Stunning, Gelfechan and The Welsh Flag Viewpoint, all out of the door and up the hill The Mawddach Trail 9. 5 Miles from Dollgellau and then back over the bridge to Barmouth and The Barmouth Town Heritage Trail for some local history of the town Ask for the map in the Railway Station and Gift Shop Fanny Talbots Grave is at Llanaber Church St Marys & St Bodfans and also worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Dinas Oleu Fortress of Light and the significance of its donation in 1895 to the National Trust As access is only on foot and is around 150 steps and paths that wind up and round the houses, I personally would recommend travelling as light as possible and having directions or photos of the path to hand On a previous visit to The Rock I was given photos which were a really great help Great Cottage Idyllic Location Thanks
The 1 star is for the view, this stay is the worst we've had with Sykes mainly due to misleading incorrect information about i access for unloading, and ii really poor instructions for getting to the cottage after unloading. We eventually got into the cottage three hours after arriving in Barmouth. I that the note site instructions have NOW been altered the unloading suggestion led to us getting our car stuck on the first cambered bend up to the cottage, locals said they sit and laugh at tourists trying to get their cars up this road! With no unloading possible close to the cottage, normal selfcatering holidaymakers need to note that they will be carrying their usual luggage up the foot of the Dinas Oleu cliff on a steep, cambered, very narrow road. This destroyed the holiday for us having booked till Friday, we left on Sunday morning, desperate to get away!
The cottage is a hidden gem with stunning views over looking Barmouth beach and harbour. We got lost on our way up to the cottage it would be easier to have it sign posted on the way up the hill but we found our way eventually. The cottage is beautiful with a lot of history and is very calming. On arrival it would be nice to have a little welcome pack with teacoffee milk just so you can catch your breath once finding it. It would be nice also to have a welcome book showing you things to do, the nearest supermarkets, days out to venture and walks. We found our way around after the first few days. Honestly though we loved our stay and found it very calming. On departing the cottage the key code number was incorrect and it was the one we entered the property with, it could do with updating. All in all though we had an amazing stay. It's a shame that it has changed since we made our booking to one dog only or we would book again for next year. For anyone wanting a cosy cottage with amazing views in Barmouth this is your place.
We had a fantastic stay at Pengarreg and hope to return next year. The views are out of this world, and the sunset is just spectacular. The property is comfy, cosy and a home from home. The bed was incredibly comfy and all towels clean and fluffy, with the interior done to a high standard. The history is fascinating with the original key, lock and all the photos. We know Barmouth well so already knew where the property was and that we had a good walk from the carpark to contend with. We paid a few pounds and parked up in the Black Patch carpark visible on google maps that is for the property, made our way to the cottage with a few light items, collected the car pass and pottered back down. Gave us all a leg stretch after a long journey with no rushing about. It is a shame there isn't a small welcome pack little milk, tea, coffee so take some with you if want a cuppa and a break. The instructions in the property were not completely accurate or the things provided to do what asked and could do with a good wipe down as were all stuck together. The black bins at the back of property were always full, so just took to the big bins in town take your ownbuy bin bags, washing tablets and dish wash tablets if want to use these facilities it also says check out is 1500, which it obviously isn't. The utility was covered in sand with wet towels in the washing machine, so we just washed them, swept and my husband fixed the taps in the shower as they fell off. I text the property manager a few days before we left as the blind in kitchen broke and I didn't want it to be an issue for the next guests, but got no reply. The things mentioned are so minor and by no means did any of the above detract from our stay. We were sad to leave and we absolutely will return, ASAP.

This is a beautiful cottage with amazing views. It is well maintained and well stocked. We were upset that we hadn't booked longer!
The photos dont do this place justice. Its location is fabulous . A few access issues but so worth it . Its actually just off the main high st and plenty of parking available there . Just a steep walk up to it so travel light .Would highly recommend

Just came back from pengarreg cottage its beautiful has beautiful views but that hill is a killer with 2 children & all bags to go up so high and dogs its not for the faint hearted you need to be fit to get up there , lovely decorated, stunning views would go back had if had road excess and would get 5 star if not for that
The hike to the Cottage is well worth the amazing views when you reach the top, we loved every second and will be back.
Beautiful cottage in amazing position overlooking the beach. Facilities were good inside, very characterful. Surprised that there was no guest info book which is usually provided re appliance instructionstop local tips etc. The steep walk up to the cottage with luggage was not for the fainthearted! However we were with the fabulous scenic benefits of a high up position when we made it up.

Fantastic property in an incredible location. Instructions to find the property arent the best but there are a couple of routes that are fine once youve gathered your bearings. Definitely burn off some calories on either route! Views are outstanding and the property is well set up. Really cosy feel. Would 100 percent go back
We love Barmouth and the surrounding area and hope to live there in the next few years. Fantastic cottage lovely views, very comfortable bed. We struggled to find the cottage because the instructions werent clear but no worries. During our stay, we used the grassy hill route just outside the cottage to walk to and from the town. We enjoyed a sunny

Brilliant cottage with exceptional views. Just need to mention it's a steep walk upto house, not suitable for less energetic people. We loved the walks that start behind the cottage, does need a few jobs doing which the owner is doing Xmas ,But would definitely stay again. Cheers Chris Adele Mike Brenda . Luna and Barney

Beautiful cottage set on the hill overlooking the bay. The walk up is totally worth the effort. The bed is desperately comfy and all the kitchen appliances are brand new. We were lucky with dry weather however I would have loved to watch a storm come in from on high
Such a lovely cottage, not for the Faint hearted its a good walk to the ... Such a lovely cottage, not for the Faint hearted its a good walk to the cottage , but when you get there its beautiful, its like going back in time , very tastefully renovated , definitely going back, well done to the owner
We had a nice weekend here, the place is very cosy with good views, the cottage is well kept and it was in a good clean condition for us when we arrived, it was very windy the weekend we stayed, and as the place is high up in the rocks and pretty open it was loud through the night, which wasnt a problem for us, it added to the adventure as my three year old son thought it was fun, also the walk to the property is a good bit of exercise if your able, again it made it a lot of fun for my son. ill have to stay with better weather next time as im sure it would be a lot more cosy, we did pick a weekend with a storm after all. Thank you for letting us stay, we had a very good weekend.
Directions to get to the cottage were quire poor but once we found the cottage it was absolutely perfect . The property is extremely well thought out with quirky finishing touches . It had everything that you could possibly need , views were stunning . It was amazing and really didnt want to leave
Benjamin
Such a beautiful home. Every last detail in the house is perfect. It couldnt be any better! The location and terrace with its elevated open views was just so perfect for watching the sun set with a glass of wine. Thank you so much. Me and my dog Zipp will be back for sure!
